Icing only, please!

Here is a video of Cole digging in to his cake! He decided he only wanted icing so he spit out any piece of cake that accidentally made its way into his mouth!

Happy 1st Birthday Cole!

I can't believe our baby boy is 1 year old! Where did the year go? It seems like yesterday he was a helpless little infant that did little more than sleep and eat. Now he is a fireball, full of life and energy and always on the go! He has such a wonderful personality, sweet and easy-going, yet funny and fearless. He is "all boy" with his rough and tumble ways, climbing on anything and getting into everything he can before mommy and daddy can even blink.

When I look back on February 20, 2009, I remember the happiest day of my life. Despite being exhausted and overwhelmed at the responsibilities of caring for a newborn, I knew that this was the moment I had been waiting for my whole life, and it was even better than I ever imagined it could be! I had my precious baby Cole, and Jeff was home from Iraq...finally we were a family!

Things have only gotten better ever since! Cole has filled our hearts with so much joy that we find ourselves asking, "How did we ever live without him?" We know we are so blessed to have this healthy, happy, precious boy in our lives.

So, to celebrate the big occasion, we had a party at our house. My parents, Cole's Mimi and Poppy, came in town for the big day. We invited over a few friends and neighbors to eat pizza, cake and ice cream. Cole had his very own cake to smash in his face, and I think it's safe to say that he has quite a sweet tooth! He opened a few presents, but mostly he wanted to play with his friends and crawl all over the house until the "sugar high" wore off.

The cake on the left was for the guests and the one on the right is the one that Cole got all to himself! It actually came with the sheet cake for free...otherwise we would not have given him such a huge cake!

Here is Cole and his special guests, Nick and Evie. He had a great time playing with them and was great about sharing his toys.

Eating cake and loving it!

Opening his gifts...thank you everyone!!!

Earlier in the day, we took Cole to get his first haircut. He did NOT enjoy it, but he did need it! He still has some of his curls in the back, but we had to trim some of it off before he ended up with a mullet!

All in all, it was a great day! I'll end this post with a couple of photos from Cole's first days of life.

Valentine's Day at the Aquarium

We took a nice family outing to the Texas State Aquarium (in downtown Corpus) for Valentine's Day. It was a gorgeous day, sunny and 75 degrees! Cole had a great time, and especially loved watching the dolphins! We have an annual pass to the park, so we are thrilled to have such a great place to take Cole that is so close to home!

Here he is checking out the sharks and the tuna...

Here he is peering in at the sea otters. They were really playful and Cole was fascinated with watching them!

January/February 2010

I know, I know--I've been slacking on the blog lately! Life has been busy at the Johnson household!

First of all, the month of January was plagued by one illness after the other for poor little Cole. He never even ran a fever in his whole life until the month of January, and then it was just one thing after another! First, he came down with Roseola, then he had "Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease" (sounds MUCH worse than it actually is!), and then a common cold turned into Croupe, which then turned into some sort of infection. But, we are happy to report that the little guy is back to his happy, healthy, giggly, self again! Hopefully we can make it through the rest of the winter without any more trips to the urgent care or after-hours calls to the pediatrician.

This should have been our first clue that Cole was coming down with something...he fell asleep sitting up on a short wagon ride around the block!

On January 31, Jeff and I took a HUGE step and went away for a week---without Cole! I didn't think I could leave him, but much to my surprise, not only did I get on the plane, but I had a great time! We went skiing in Telluride, Colorado. It was our first time skiing in 10 years! We enjoyed it so much that we are determined to make it a ritual. We are so excited for Cole to be old enough to get out on the slopes with us!

Jeff's parents came out and stayed with Cole while we were gone, and everything went great! As you can see from the photos, Cole had a blast with his Gigi and Grandpa. The best part of the whole trip, though, was coming home to our sweet boy! The moment he saw us, he was grinning ear to ear, about to burst with happiness. What an awesome feeling!

Cole enjoyed his outings with Gigi and Grandpa, swinging on the porch, and of course, getting into some mischief...

Since we've been home, he has said "Da-da" and "doggy" a few times, and he says "mama" all the time! He is still not walking yet, but he is very close.

We can't believe his first birthday is coming up! He got to practice wearing his party hat at Karine Dunston's 2nd birthday party. It has been so fun to watch him interact with the Dunston clan this year, as if they are his own brothers and sisters! My friend, Staci, watches Cole at her house while I work, so Cole is learning to play with kids of all ages (Ella is 4, Karine is 2, Gavin is 7 months) and he loves being over there!

This year has been the best year of our lives, filled with more happy memories than I can possibly count!
